Apple Crumble is one of those desserts that I love so much, but never make it enough. This may sound sad to some or all of you, but when I eat crumble it feels like a warm hug, especially when it's served with custard. Unfortunately, when I made this one, I only had ice cream on deck. But luckily, crumble tastes amazing with ice cream too. Especially Mackie's vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients:
Filling:
6 apples, peeled, cored and cut into cubes
3 tablespoons of caster sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Crumble:
175g plain flour
110g caster sugar
110g cold butter, cubed
Pinch of salt
30g rolled oats (optional)
Topping:
Caster sugar, sprinkling
To serve:
Ice cream or custard to serve
Method:
- Cut up your apples into cubes and place in a sauce pan. Add in the cinnamon, sugar and 3 tablespoons of water and mix.
- Place it on the hob over a low to medium heat to cook until the apples become soft, but still holding their shape. You don't want apple sauce.
- Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan.
- When your apples are done, place them in your dish of choice.
- In a bowl, add the flour, butter and sugar and rub the ingredients together between your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.*
- Pour the crumble mix over the apples. Take a fork and run it across the top to make sure the crumble is covering the apples evenly. Also, the fork lines over the top of crumble are mandatory.
- Place the crumble in the over and cook for 35-40 minutes until the crumble is golden brown.
- Serve with custard or ice cream and enjoy.
